Message on World Malaria Day

世界防治疟疾日致辞

World Malaria Day is an opportunity to celebratethe fact that the world is on track to meet theglobal Millennium Development Goal target ofreversing the incidence of malaria.

扭转疟疾发病率是全球千年发展目标的指标之一，值此世界防治疟疾日，我们高兴地看到这项工作正在顺利进行。

I applaud the many committed partners whose concerted efforts have saved well over 3million lives since 2000. The global malaria mortality rate has been reduced by more than 40per cent and many countries have successfully moved closer to eliminating the disease.

我对许多坚定的伙伴表示赞扬，2000年来他们的一致努力拯救了300多万人的生命。全球疟疾死亡率下降超过40%，许多国家正在顺利接近消灭疟疾的目标。

Preventing and treating malaria ensures that more children are well enough to stay in school,learn skills and grow into productive members of society. This spares human suffering,increases household income and contributes to economic development.

防治疟疾可以增强更多儿童的体魄，使他们能够上学、学习技能并成为社会的有用成员。防治疟疾能够消除人类苦难、增加家庭收入并促进经济发展。

While we applaud progress to date, we must confront the fact that malaria still kills more thanhalf a million people every year. Most of these people are still small children, under five years old,living in sub-Saharan Africa. Too many cases still go untested, unregistered and untreated.

我们为迄今取得的进展而欢呼，但是我们必须正视这一事实，即每年仍有超过50万人死于疟疾，而其中的多数是生活在撒哈拉南部非洲不足五岁的婴幼儿。还有许多疾病病例没有得到检测、登记和治疗。

Today, I repeat my call for continued investment and sustained political commitment, and willto improve malaria prevention and control. We need more funding to maintain progress andcontinue scaling up coverage of effective malaria interventions. We need more resources todevelop and maintain effective surveillance programmes and to combat increasing mosquitoresistance to insecticides and parasite resistance to antimalarial drugs.

今天，我再次发出呼吁，为了加强疟疾的防控，必须继续提供投入并展示出持久的政治承诺和意愿。

我们需要更多的资金，来保持我们取得的进展，并继续扩大有效防治疟疾的覆盖。我们需要更多的资源，来制定和维持有效的检测计划，应对蚊子对杀虫剂的抵抗力并应对寄生虫对抗疟疾药品的抵抗力。

On this World Malaria Day, let us renew our collective commitment to combat malaria andultimately defeat this deadly disease.

值此世界防治疟疾日，让我们再次作出集体承诺，继续开展疟疾防治工作，直至最终消灭这一吞噬人类生命的疾病。
